Banned and Challenged Books

Celebrating Your Right to Read

Based on collected and balanced evidence, writers will determine whether a book on the ALA Banned and Challenged Book List is worthy of its objectionable status and whether they would recommend the book to anyone else.

Celebrating Your Right to Read

Books are often challenged with the best intentions--to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information. However, these challenges are acts of censorship and limit intellectual freedom, topics about which many have passionate opinions.  In this writing invitation, writers will read one or more books from the American Library Association's (ALA) Banned and Challenged Book List and develop a position paper with research/evidence to argue for or against a book's status on the list.
