Consider using the book as a portfolio: My Year in Science, My Year in Social Studies, or even My Second Grade Yearbook, etc. The student can draw a page and write about memorable lessons from that subject area or students can capture their academic experiences and achievements from the year. You can even use it as a summative assessment in any subject, turning it into a collection of illustrated I Can . . . statements.
